Insulin Pens I use

Being a type 1 Diabetic you more than likely will be using insulin to control your sugars.  Even those with gestational diabetes may begin an insulin regiment.  My first use of insulin began with the Novolog FlexPen.

Above is the pic of the FlexPen I use with my meals.  This is a fast acting insulin which works within 30 minutes of injection.  I inject myself usually within 15 to 20 minutes before my meals.  I am on a sliding scale insulin regiment and the amount of units injected depends on my blood sugar before my meal and I adjust accordingly.

This pen uses disposable novofine 30g pen needles. From my experience the needle is thinner and shorter than normal needles.  I usually inject myself in the abdominal area at an angle and is painless.  During pregnancy I wasn't allowed to use these insulins pens and had to use the larger long needles and insulin in a vial.  I recently heard that some Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinics are now allowing those with diabetes while pregnant use the insulin pens (I wish I was able to during my pregnancies). Guessing more studies have been done to see the usefulness during pregnancy.

In conjunction with the Novolog Flexpen I also use the Lantus SoloStar pen.
I use this pen once a day since it is a long acting pen. Has the 24 hour coverage I need.
So throughout the day I inject myself a minimum of four times! To most it seems a bit excessive but it works with better controlling my blood sugars. I inject myself with the Novolog FlexPen three times a day and the Lantus SoloStar once a day.
